Holder of a ‘Q’ quality seal, the Gira Basic Q smoke alarm device meets the stringent quality criteria of vfdb (German Fire protection Association) guideline 14-01 and DIN EN 14604:2009-02. The Q stands for verified durability and the reduction of false alarms with simultaneously increased stability, e.g. against external factors.

The Gira Basic Q smoke alarm device detects fires at an early stage from the build-up of smoke. To do this, it uses the photoelectric scattered-light principle: A diode in the device continuously emits light signals to detect smoke, and a photo cell analyses the scattered light caused by smoke particles. An alarm is triggered as soon as the concentration of scattered light exceeds the limit.

The Gira Basic Q smoke alarm device continuously monitors its smoke analysis and checks the battery voltage. Any faults are indicated by a fault signal (signal tone and LED). The Gira Basic Q smoke alarm device signals that the device will have to be replaced 30 days in advance. The device remains completely functional during this period.

There should be smoke alarm devices in the hallway and staircase, as well as in each bedroom and children’s room. In buildings with several floors, there should be at least one smoke alarm device on each floor. This increases the safety of all the occupants of the building. Note: In the kitchen, the Gira Basic Q smoke alarm device should be installed as far from the cooking area as possible in order to prevent false alarms caused by water vapour.

Smoke alarm devices are lifesavers – and must therefore be able to do their job reliably in case of an emergency. For this reason, you must ensure that they are correctly installed. In order to ensure that smoke alarm detectors are professionally installed in accordance with DIN 14676, the standard provides recommendations for verifying the professional competence of service providers performing the planning, installation and maintenance of such devices.

400 fire deaths, 4,000 burn victims with long-term damage and more than a billion euros of fire damage in the private sector every year – in most cases, a smoke alarm device could have saved lives, because far more than half of all fire victims are caught unaware while asleep at night. Nowadays, Germany has implemented a nationwide regulation requiring the installation of smoke alarm devices. This means that all new builds and conversions at least must be equipped with suitable smoke alarm devices in bedrooms, children’s rooms, and hallways that are used as rescue routes leading outdoors. In some cases, various transitional regulations apply to existing residences. They must then also be equipped accordingly.

The Gira Basic Q smoke alarm device has a flat design which enables easy installation. The battery-operated device requires no wire connections and functions optimally when it is mounted under the ceiling in the middle of the room. Where smoke alarm devices should be positioned to guarantee minimum protection varies depending on the design of the house or apartment. In single-story apartments, the hallway used most frequently in case of fire should be part of the minimum configuration. In multi-story buildings, the hallways of each story must be included. However, it is advisable to equip all rooms for optimum protection.
